Maximiliano Véjares, PhD, is a Senior Research Associate at the Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab at the Johns Hopkins University and a Research Fellow in the Center for Latin American & Latino Studies at American University in Washington, DC. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and an M.A. in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago.
Dr. Véjares writes about trade, geopolitics, and Chilean politics. His academic research spans the origins of state capacity, democracy, and industrial development, with an empirical focus on Latin America. His work, “Varieties of State-Building: Ecology, Clientelism, and Bureaucratic Rule in Chile,” was recently published in Perspectives on Politics.
Beyond academia, he has held research roles at Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the University of Chicago, the WZB Social Science Research Center, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
